NSN DELEGATION VISITS HON. MINISTER OF HEALTH A high powered delegation of Nutrition Society of Nigeria members paid a courtesy call on Nigerias new Minister of Health, Prof. Adenike Grange, at her office in Abuja on January 15, 2008. The visit was undertaken primarily to congratulate the minister (a long standing member of NSN) on her appointment, express the support of the Society and to offer whatever assistance she might require in the discharge of her duties. The delegation also took the opportunity of the visit to highlight some outstanding nutrition related issues which the Society considers need urgent attention by the Federal Ministry of Health. In her address to the delegation, the Hon. Minister expressed her happiness and thanked the Society for the visit. She reiterated her continued commitment to the aims and objectives of the NSN. She was very appreciative of the issues raised by the delegation and immediately directed her staff to initiate action on some of them.
NSN PROTESTS PROPOSED SCRAPPING OF SCHOOL FEEDING Some press reports (The Guardian, February 15, 2008) carried the comments of the Chairman UBEC, to the effect that the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme of the Federal Government may be scrapped. The reason given for this is that the programme was becoming too expensive. The Chairman reportedly said this when a delegation of Nigeria Union of Teachers visited him at this office in Abuja. The Nutrition Society of Nigeria considers even the thought of scrapping the programme unacceptable and has written to UBEC Chairman to express our concern. All members are enjoined to lend their voice to this protest at any available opportunity.
